Red Burgundy
2001 - Rating 8/10
An above average, but tricky vintage in which careful selection was
essential.

Gevery Chambertin, 1er Cru Les Champeaux
Domaine Tortochet
From the northern slopes overlooking the village of Gevrey-
Chambertin, this excellent wine is intense and reflects its terroir. Fully
mature burgundy drinking beautifully now

Big, fat un-European like vintage, certainly un-burgundian.
Caused by a scorching summer. The wines will be long lived and may
take a few years to grow into themselves.

Difficult vintage, blighted by an indifferent summer with hail
storms and generally poor conditions. The Chorey from Tollot-Beaut is
delicious

As with all of France (and even in the UK!) a heat wave summer.
Careful selection was essential.

Chateau Musar
A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon,
Cinsault and Carignan, produced from vines grown at 1000m above sea level.
Vintages are only released after a number of years in bottle and although
they are ready to be enjoyed upon release, most vintages of Musar benefit
from prolonged ageing. I have tasted a number of older vintages, including
the 1978, 1977 and 1961; all of which are still full of vitality. The
current release is the 2000 and having tasted this, I believe it to be one
of the finest recent examples from Chateau Musar, perhaps along the lines of
the great 1990 even.

2005 Taylor's
Quinta de Terra Feita
Comparing against Vargellas it is amazing how
different (and therefore complementary) they are. This is much earthier with
fresh tobacco and a touch of garrigues. At this stage it has more vigour and
definition. The palate is full-bodied, very cohesive and powerful with
blackberry and earth laced with hints of cherry, fig and a touch of apricot.
A rather grainy texture, very good grip and a complex finish that has great
persistency. Very fine, if slightly broody single Quinta. Drinking
2015-2035. 93pt N.Martin

2005 Croft
Quinta da Roeda
This usually forms the backbone of Croft. At first it appears to have less
vigour and complexity than the Vargellas 2005 but do not be fooled, it
blossoms in the glass with develops an entrancing bouquet of black cherries,
violets, rose petals, blood orange and garrigues. That garrigues quality
infuses the palate, which is full-bodied and muscular, quite firm tannins
with layers of black fruits and a touch of book orange waving au revoir on
the finish. A superb Roêda. Drinking 2015-2035.
